Sensors also degrade faster in constant humidity than they do in a dry climate. Register the same finger two or three times at different angles — it makes a noticeable difference. This is the standard in condo buildings and offices because credentials are easy to hand out and easy to revoke, and there is nothing for a user to forget. Face recognition and camera locks
The newest category. A camera on the lock face recognises you and opens as you walk up; many also work as a video doorbell, recording who came to the door. Impressive when it works, and genuinely useful when your hands are full.
Be aware of what you are taking on. These are the most power-hungry locks made — expect to charge or change batteries far more often. Recognition slows in low light and in bright direct sun on the door, both of which describe a Florida front door at different hours. And a camera on your door raises questions worth thinking through in a condo building, where the association may have rules about recording common corridors. Typical range: $250–$450.
Which Features Actually Matter?
After two decades of installing these, a short list separates the locks people are still happy with in year three from the ones they replace.
A mechanical override key
The single most important feature, and the one buyers most often skip to save money or preserve a clean look. Batteries die at inconvenient times. A physical keyway on the exterior means a dead battery is an annoyance rather than a locksmith call. Some keyless models instead provide emergency power through a 9V battery terminal or USB-C port — that works too, as long as you know it is there.
Auto-lock, and the ability to turn it off
The lock re-engages on its own after a set delay. Useful, and the reason a good number of our lockout calls involve smart locks: the door closes behind someone taking out the trash, the timer runs, and they are outside without a phone or a code. Any lock worth buying lets you set the delay or disable it entirely.
Access logs
A record of who entered and when. On a family home this is a curiosity. On a rental, a property you leave for the season, or a home with regular service visits, it is the feature people say they would not give up.
Temporary and scheduled codes
A code that works only Tuesdays between 9 and 12, or expires on a set date. This is the feature that makes smart locks worth it for anyone with a cleaner, a dog walker, or guests — the code stops working on its own, so there is nothing to remember to revoke.
Tamper and forced-entry alerts
The lock notifies you if someone attempts entry or the unit is struck. Worth having, though treat it as information rather than protection: the deadbolt and the door frame do the actual work.
The Grade Number That Tells You More Than the Spec Sheet
Every lock claims military-grade steel and bank-grade encryption. Those phrases mean nothing. There is one number that does: the ANSI/BHMA grade, set by the Builders Hardware Manufacturers Association and awarded only after physical tamper, cycle and impact testing.
- Grade 1 — commercial standard. Overkill for most homes, appropriate for a front door that gets heavy use.
- Grade 2 — the sensible residential target. This is what we recommend for an exterior door.
- Grade 3 — minimum residential. Most inexpensive smart locks sit here, and it shows on a door opened several times a day.
If a listing does not state a grade anywhere, that is the answer. Manufacturers who pass the testing say so.
What About the $45 Smart Lock on Amazon?
This comes up on almost every consultation, and it deserves a straight answer rather than a sales pitch. A large share of smart lock listings on Amazon are unbranded keypads from companies that did not exist three years ago. Some are perfectly functional pieces of hardware. The problem is not the metal — it is everything attached to it.
The app is the weak point, not the lock. A mechanical deadbolt from 1995 still works. A smart lock is a deadbolt plus software, and the software needs someone maintaining it. When the manufacturer folds or loses interest, the app stops receiving updates, then stops working with a new phone OS, and eventually disappears from the store. The bolt still throws by hand — but every feature you paid for is gone.
There are no parts. With Schlage, Yale or Kwikset we can order a replacement thumbturn, motor assembly or keypad and have the lock working again. With an unbranded unit there is no parts channel, and a single failed component means replacing the whole lock. That is the situation we are most often called into.
Watch for a subscription. A growing number of manufacturers now put access logs, notifications or remote unlocking behind a monthly fee. The lock is cheap; the features you actually wanted are not included. Check what the app costs before you buy the hardware.
What to check before ordering. Does the listing state an ANSI/BHMA grade? Is there a mechanical key override? Does the brand publish a phone number and a warranty you can read? Does it support Matter, or is it locked to one app? Four questions, two minutes, and they filter out most of what goes wrong.
Matter, Thread and Not Getting Locked In
Until recently, choosing a smart lock meant choosing an ecosystem — and being stuck in it. Matter and Thread are the interoperability standards that changed that, letting a lock work across Apple Home, Google Home and Alexa rather than one of them. Apple's Home Key and Samsung's Digital Home Key add tap-to-unlock with a phone or watch on supported models.
The practical advice is simple: buy Matter-compatible if you have the option. It costs little extra now and means the lock is still useful if you change phones or platforms in three years. Locks tied to a single proprietary app age badly, and that is true of expensive ones as well as cheap ones.

What Fails First in Florida
Salt, humidity and heat are harder on these locks than anything the manufacturer tested for, and the failures follow a pattern.
Batteries, well before the claimed life. A Wi-Fi lock on a sun-exposed door that we would expect to run twelve months in a mild climate frequently needs new cells in four. If you are within a few miles of the water and want to change batteries once a year rather than three times, choose Z-Wave or Bluetooth over direct Wi-Fi.
Exterior finish, on coastal doors. Within about a mile of the ocean, standard finishes pit and discolour within a couple of seasons — polished chrome and brass are the first to go. If you are within a few blocks of the water, specify a PVD finish or matte black. It costs a little more once and still looks acceptable in year five.
Keypad membranes, from UV. Constant direct sun makes rubber keypads brittle and they begin to crack. A touchscreen or metal-button model on a sun-facing door will outlast a rubber one comfortably.
Fingerprint sensors, from moisture. Read rates drop over time on doors with heavy humidity exposure. This is gradual rather than sudden — it starts as the occasional retry and becomes routine.
Do You Actually Need One?
We install these regularly and we like them, but they are not the right answer for everyone.
Worth it if you run a short-term rental, you have service people coming regularly, you leave the property for part of the year, or you are simply tired of carrying keys. The code you delete when someone leaves solves a problem rekeying cannot keep up with.
Probably not worth it if your household is two people who both carry keys, your door and frame need attention first, or nobody in the house wants to manage an app. A good mechanical deadbolt properly installed in a solid frame outperforms a cheap smart lock in a soft one, every time.
And whichever way you go, get the frame right first. The basics that actually stop a door being forced — a long strike plate and three-inch screws into the framing — cost very little and matter more than the lock bolted to them.
