US Locksmith (Lic #00443LK) rekeys locks from $39 per cylinder plus a $29 service call across Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach. A home with three exterior locks starts at $146 total, and every door can share one new key.

How Much Does It Cost to Rekey a Lock?

From $39 per cylinder, plus a $29 service call. At the starting price, three exterior locks come to $146 ($29 + 3 × $39), with new keys included. Each lock is priced by its cylinder: a deadbolt and the knob below it are two cylinders.

Rekeying is almost always cheaper than changing the locks, because the hardware stays on the door. Most homes are done in a single visit.

What Does Rekeying Actually Do?

Every pin-tumbler lock has small pins of different lengths that match the cuts on your key. When we rekey, we take the cylinder apart and replace those pins with a new set cut for a new key. The lock looks and works the same, but every old key — the ones with the previous owner, the contractor or the ex-tenant — stops working.

When Should You Rekey Your Locks?

  • After you move in — you cannot know how many copies of the old keys exist.
  • Between tenants — the fastest, cheapest way to secure a rental between leases.
  • After lost or stolen keys — especially if the keys were with something showing your address.
  • When an employee or contractor leaves with a key.
  • When you carry too many keys — we key every door to one key.

Can Every Door Use One Key?

Yes, as long as the locks share the same keyway — most Kwikset locks can match each other, and most Schlage locks can match each other. If your home mixes brands, we change one or two cylinders so everything runs on one key. For a business, a master key system goes further: one key for the owner, limited keys for staff. See our commercial locksmith page.

When Is Rekeying Not Enough?

When the lock itself is the problem. A worn lock that sticks, a deadbolt damaged in a break-in, or a cheap lock you want to upgrade should be replaced, not rekeyed — see lock change and replacement. If you want keys that no one can copy without your permission, look at high-security locks, which can be rekeyed later with registered keys.

Rekeying in West Palm Beach and Across South Florida

We rekey homes, condos and rentals across Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach, including West Palm Beach, Boca Raton, Fort Lauderdale, Hollywood and Miami. Locked out and need new keys at the same time? Our technician can open the door and rekey the lock in the same visit.

Typical Situations We Handle

Pembroke Pines, just moved in

A family closes on a house with a front deadbolt and knob, a back door and a garage entry — five cylinders and three different keys. We rekey all five to one new key in a single visit: $29 + 5 × $39 = $224 at the starting price.

Boca Raton rental between tenants

The tenant moved out with two keys unreturned. Instead of buying new locks, the owner has the front and back deadbolts rekeyed the day after move-out, and the new tenant gets fresh keys at check-in.

Rekeying Questions

How much does it cost to rekey a whole house?
Rekeying starts at $39 per cylinder plus a $29 service call. A typical home with three to five cylinders comes to $146–$224 at the starting price, with every door keyed to one new key.
Do I need the old key to rekey a lock?
It helps but is not required. With the working key, the cylinder comes out quickly. Without it, we open the lock first, then rekey it, which takes a little longer.
How many new keys come with a rekey?
Each rekey comes with new keys for the lock. Tell us how many people need a key and we cut the extras on the spot, so you leave with a full set.
Can a rekeyed lock be rekeyed again later?
Yes. A lock can be rekeyed many times as long as the cylinder is in good condition, which is why landlords rekey between tenants instead of buying new locks.
Is rekeying cheaper than changing locks?
Almost always. Rekeying starts at $39 per cylinder because the hardware stays on the door; replacing a standard deadbolt with new hardware runs $75–$150. Replace instead only when the lock is worn, damaged or due for an upgrade.
